Tired of Spam Comments or Fake Form Submissions? Here’s How to Stop Them.

Filtering spam emails on a website

You open your inbox in the morning, and 20 new “inquiries” are waiting for you. You click them, only to find gibberish, suspicious links, or blatant advertising. Does this sound familiar?

Spam isn’t just annoying; it’s a genuine business risk. When your forms are flooded with junk, you risk missing real customer inquiries, and worse, your server might get blacklisted by email providers, meaning your legitimate emails won’t reach your clients.

Here are 3 steps to take back control of your website.

1. CAPTCHA: The Traditional Gatekeeper

The most common solution is Google reCAPTCHA. You know the drill: pick the traffic lights or crosswalks from a grid of images.

  • The Pro: It’s very effective at stopping automated bots.
  • The Con: Your real customers hate it. Every extra click reduces the chances of someone actually finishing your contact form.

2. The “Honeypot” Technique (The Invisible Shield)

This is my personal favorite. The concept is simple: we place a hidden field on the form that human visitors cannot see, but bots (which read the raw code) will fill out automatically. If that field is populated, we know it’s a bot, and we block the submission instantly.

  • The Pro: Your visitors never see it, so your forms remain fast, clean, and user-friendly.

3. Professional Spam Filtering

If you’re running WordPress, you don’t need to reinvent the wheel. Tools like Antispam Bee or a well-configured Akismet can help significantly. A word of caution: Installing too many plugins will only slow your site down (see my previous article on performance). In security, “less is more” when configured correctly.

Pro Tip: If you’re experiencing strange errors alongside spam, or your site feels sluggish, it might not just be a bot annoyance: you could be dealing with a security vulnerability. In those cases, spam filtering is just treating the symptoms, not the cause.

Don’t Want to Deal With This Yourself?

I know you didn’t start your business to spend your day fighting spam bots. You have better things to do.

Let me secure your website:

  • I’ll configure the most effective, user-friendly spam protection.
  • I’ll set up automated backups so you always have a safety net.
  • I’ll perform a security sweep to make sure there are no “uninvited guests” already inside your system.

Don’t let junk clutter your digital storefront.
